Hearing Aids
I have been dealing with the need for hearing aids ever since my mother shared with me that she thought she needed a hearing test in 1978, when she was only 65. My husband and I went with her to her first appointment, and thus began a journey that took us to many places, in search of better hearing, first for her, and then later for me. Think they say hearing loss can be hereditary, and so I should not have been surprised that my mother’s wish that I could understand how isolated she felt by not being able to hear well would happen to me. As she aged, her hearing loss progressed, and she moved to Stillwater, where I could help her with her various medical needs.
She adapted well to Stillwater, made new friends, and heard about possible ways to improve her hearing. Finally, we went to the Hough Ear Institute, affiliated with Intergris Baptist Medical Center, where she was tested and fitted with newer hearing aids. They helped her a lot, but from time to time, they needed some adjustments, or repairs and the trip to Oklahoma City was not always convenient. That is when I turned to the Stillwater Hearing Clinic and Janet Thompson. I had known Janet for several years, since we had children in school together and one of my daughters was a “baby sitter” for her daughter for several summers. But, I came to know Janet professionally, as a very caring and patient person when she worked with my mom’s severe hearing loss and teaching our family ways to deal better with it. Janet and her staff were always ready to help resolve our problems. Getting free hearing aid batteries was a bonus factor.
Over the years, it became apparent that my own hearing ability had diminished and I too would need hearing aids – so, of course, I went to Janet. I started out with one, in the ear that had the greater hearing loss, then added a second, both were Unitron Conversa Canal aids. These served me well until the last two years or so, when it become more difficult for me to discern sounds, especially as I was working as a volunteer with Stillwater Literacy Council, helping several Iraqi ladies improve their conversational English. At that time, Janet suggested that I start saving up for some new hearing aids, so I could buy two at one time. Earlier this year, the older of my two hearing aids stopped working, and as a stop-gap measure, Janet fitted me with a new ear mold so I could use one of my mother’s BTE hearing aids until I could pay for a pair of new hearing aids. That was when it became even more evident to tme how hard it was for my Mom to participate in most conversations. You can be sure, it did not take long before my husband and I figured out that it was time to “take the plunge” and get the new hearing aids, especially since we had a summer full of family events/reunions ahead of us and I wanted to enjoy those times with our families. So, by early June, I had my new Oticon Agil ProRite hearing aids. They have made such a difference in what I can now hear again. My husband thinks so too. In fact, whenever we are going somewhere, he always asks whether I have my hearing aids because he knows they are so important. It does not matter if it is in noisy situations or quiet conversation, I can now hear and be part of whatever is happening. I am so thankful that I can hear better again. I thank Janet Thompson for her patience in helping, first my mothers, and now me, to hear better using the latest technologies available.

When my children began telling me, “Mom you need a hearing aid”, that was a reality! I knew I had a problem. One day I walked out to my mailbox and there was a card from Stillwater Hearing Clinic. I called for an appointment. Janet Thompson listened to me, did some testing and put a pair of trial hearing aids on me and I was so excited. I could hear so well. She ordered a pair of hearing aids best suited for me and I will never forget the day I left her office with them. I left her office, got in my car turned on my right turn signal… and to my surprise, I could hear it clicking. That day Janet gave me a whole new outlook on life. Janet and Donna are caring people and they have really helped me. Hearing aids have opened my world. One phone call can change your life too. Oh, and I turned down the car radio too!
Sincerely,
